Behaviour & Training

Does your dog, cat or rabbit have behaviour problems or is he/she in need of some training? We can help… We offer one-to-one practical training sessions and behaviour consults at reasonable rates to help you understand your pet, establish why the behaviour is happening and then work with you and your pet to help fix the problem.

Jo is a qualified behaviourist Cert AAB (Applied Animal Behaviour) and therefore can offer comprehensive behaviour consultations and modification programmes. Supported by dog trainer Sarah (ABTC) we are the perfect team to improve both you and your dogs/cats/rabbits quality of life. Consultations take place in your own home so that you and your pet can feel as relaxed and comfortable as possible. ONLY THE LATEST, KIND, POSITIVE METHODS OF TRAINING & BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION ARE USED.

Sarah is a fully qualified dog trainer who meets the strict criteria to be registered with the Animal Behaviour & Training Council (www.abtcouncil.org.uk).  She is also a Puppy School tutor trained by renowned dog trainer and author Gwen Bailey. Sarah also has a Diploma in Canine Studies with Oxford, of which she passed with distinction.

Together we also offer one-2-one training sessions to help you with things such as ‘pulling on the lead’, ‘recall problems’, ‘mouthing, ‘jumping up’ etc.

Puppy School training and socialisation classes are also available for all fully vaccinated puppies aged 12-20 weeks. This is a 6 week course on a Monday evening in Sompting, aimed at bringing up your puppy to be well socialised and adjusted to help prevent behaviour and training problems in the future. Junior / Adult training classes are also available on a Monday evening in Sompting. Please contact us for more details. The Puppy School course is designed and maintained by the UKs leading behaviourist Gwen Bailey.

We have another new member of the Pet-Professionals team – well, sort of…. its Henry – the stuffed stooge dog!

It is well known that behaviourists occasionally have to use what we call a  ’stooge’ dog when we are working with dog reactive dogs. Traditionally a well  trained, very well rounded, non reactive live dog is used to assess the ‘threshold’  of  the reactive dog we are working with. The downside of this though is that we  always have to consider the emotional impact of the ‘stooge dog’ and that we  cannot always assess the level of reactivity as it not be safe or fair to do so using a  live dog.
We are very lucky to have India – my 9 year old collie x on our team and  she is often used in our behavioural consults.

A while ago I attended a 3 day dog aggression course with renowned behaviourist Gwen Bailey. We used stuffed stooge dogs on the course so that the reactive dog  could get close and show us exactly how far he was willing to take his aggression (it  usually takes the dog a few seconds to realise its not a real dog as we make the  stuffed dog move on the end of a lead etc).

So as soon as I got back from the course we invested in Henry – the stuffed Husky!
We have used Henry successfully numerous times in behaviour consultations so that we may find out the degree, type and level of aggression of the dog we are working with. We are then able to do some desensitisation work using India, our real life stooge, if it is safe and appropriate to do so.

We do get some rather odd looks ‘walking’ Henry around but it serves the purpose well!
